With both its well-developed infrastructure and intrinsically cylinder-based form, gravure has become the dominant force for rotary printing within Japan.
For flexo printers looking to gain the benefits of rotary printing, one simple solution has been to take advantage of flexo’s namesake flexibility to wrap photopolymer plates around the cylinder of a rotary press. While this provides a method for basic endless printing applications, the joint between the plate edges prevents true seamless printing.A more elegant solution however is the use of seamless photopolymer sleeves. While these sleeves are popular in Europe and the United States, where rotary flexo presses are often used for film-based packaging, they remain an uncommon niche within Japan.

Endless Sleeves
An endless plate made through the precision cutting and aligning of an intricate pattern plate.
This endless sleeve requires the cutting and pattern joining of flexible photopolymer plates around a solid core. This leaves a seam; however it achieves results similar to a seamless roll at a cheaper cost.
